Announcement of the second edition of the Hamid Bin Rashid International Sustainability Award

The Department of Municipalities and Planning in Ajman recently announced details of the second edition of the Hamid Bin Rashid International Sustainability Award. Applications will be accepted starting from October 15, and the winners will be announced in March 2024 during the Ajman International Conference. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2023.

Engineer Khalid Moeen Al Hosani, the Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment sector, affirmed that the goal of the award is to honor and promote sustainability, whether in terms of research or individuals who have made significant contributions in this field. The award is granted to institutions that adopt and implement sustainability principles, becoming an exemplary model for other organizations.

Categories of the Award

The Hosni explained that the Hamid bin Rashid International Sustainability Award covers several sustainability areas to attract a wide range of researchers and engineers. It is divided into three categories: Best Research Award in Sustainable Cities, Environmental Personalities who have influenced innovation, introduced environmentally friendly technology, and supported the concept of sustainability; and Best Institution Award or its governmental or private institution that adopts best green practices and contributes to protecting natural resources and preserving the environment and sustainable development. The competition also includes an award for the best poster for a scientific or experimental idea that serves the environment.

The award shield will also be presented to the best environmental personality who has had an impact on innovation, introduced environmentally friendly technology, or supported the concept of sustainability. The best institution will receive an honorary shield for the governmental or private institution or organization that adopts the best green practices and contributes to protecting natural resources, preserving the environment, and achieving sustainable development.

The award covers various topics such as climate change and the environment, the impact of climate change on the environmental status of Earth's natural resources, the effect of climate change on global agricultural activities, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, environmental rehabilitation in natural areas like the marshlands between the rivers and green landscapes, and the management of protected areas.

It covers topics such as the causes of air pollution and its control, features of air pollution in urban areas and wildlife, advanced techniques to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, achieving carbon neutrality, patterns of predicting air pollution in cities and industrial areas. Other topics include green transportation, sustainable material selection and waste recycling, the latest developments in sustainable materials in construction and industrial applications, zero industrial waste through waste management and material recycling and reuse, achieving green construction and maintenance through sustainable practices, effective design, and implementation. 3D printing and its contribution to sustainable development, production of clean water and sewage treatment, greywater treatment techniques and reuse, advancements in desalination and its energy effects. It also includes water harvesting methods, measures, and awareness to reduce water pollution, clean and renewable energy alternatives, exploring the use of solar, wind, nuclear energy, and other energy sources.

It will also cover the assessment of the impact of renewable energy on the environment and sustainability, the impact of alternative energy on the economy, fossil fuel production, and waste-to-energy conversion models, such as generating power from heat production for waste treatment.
